Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period.

Hailing from Eastern Germany, He is well known for several significant works; orchestral music such as the 6 Brandenburg Concertos, keyboard works such as the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier; organ works such as the Schubler Chorales and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and choral (religious and secular) works such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach Revival, he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.

His music appeared in Season 1 of Little Einsteins.

  • He is the most respected and recognized classical composer throughout the former East Germany, and was central in shaping the country's music culture.
    • Additionally, the East German government had spent money converting his house in Eisenach into a museum dedicated to his life and achievements. It also included 300 instruments that he used throughout his life.
    • School children from across East Germany would gather for a Bach competition held in East Berlin for every second year.
    • A TV miniseries based on Johann Sebastian Bach's life premiered on the East German state television broadcaster, DDR 1 (Deutscher Fernsehfunk) in 1985. The miniseries was produced in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Bach's birth.
