Jean-Joseph Mouret (11 April 1682 – 22 December 1738) was a French composer from the Baroque period.

His dramatic works made him one of the leading exponents of Baroque music in his country. Even though most of his works are rarely performed and recorded, Mouret's name survives today thanks to the popularity of the Fanfare-Rondeau from his first Suite de symphonies, which has been adopted as the signature tune of the PBS 70s program Masterpiece and is a popular musical choice in many modern weddings. Most of the time, he composed mainly for the stage, writing several operas for the Paris Opéra, such as Ariane, which premiered in 1717.

His music appeared in Season 2 of Little Einsteins.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike most composers featured in Season 2, Jean-Joseph Mouret lacks any portraits of him. This is because no known portraits and pictures of him were ever found at the time, making him a somewhat minor and ambiguous composer. Additionally, many of his other compositions have since become lost media over time.
    • Claimed portraits found online that are commonly used to attribute to Jean-Joseph Mouret were used from other existing portraits depicting different people. This makes Jean-Joseph Mouret to lack any portraits of himself whatsoever.
  • He has the least coverage when compared to the other composers featured on the first season of Little Einsteins.
    • This is because, the composers exclusively featured in Season 1 of Little Einsteins (Bach, Vivaldi, Brahms, Rimsky-Korsakov) had at least several other works that are still performed. Most of Mouret's works, however, are rarely performed or are not performed at all, and have become lost media (with the exception of the Fanfare-Rondeau from Suite de symphonies No. 1).
  • The Rondeau movement from his Suite de Symphonies No. 1 composition would later be known for being the opening theme to the television show, Masterpiece Theatre.
