Edward Hicks was an American naïve art painter who started off his career as a coach painter and Quaker minister in the state of Pennsylvania. Due to schisms impacting the Religious Society of Friends in the 1820s and Hicks' own Quaker faith discouraging decorative art like his own, he turned to canvas painting full-time, during which he would paint 62 variations of The Peaceable Kingdom, a scene inspired by biblical passages from Isaiah 11:6-8.
